Simple steps to De-clutter and Save Serious Money

According to a research study conducted by CORE DATA suggests that an Australian home is having, on average, clutter worth of $6623, which translates to $59,361,949,000 worth of clutter Australia wide.

Now imagine what we could do with this amount of money – may be pay off our mortgage or rent or credit card, may be book that long awaited holiday for ourselves? Can we not appreciate what we are able to do with this money that may be already hiding underneath the clutter in our home all this while.

Let’s focus on how to figure out and reveal this treasure that may be hidden for so long. Do you know, that most of the clutter happens when we do not keep a stock take on a regular basis of all the items we possess and we end up keep buying duplicates of the same thing. Wouldn’t it be helpful if we already knew what we have, so that we are less likely to buy a duplicate, and save some serious money, and again, reduce unnecessary clutter?

De-cluttering & organising not only simplifies lives but also brings calm, joy, spaciousness and abundance in the space as it allows for easy flow of energy and creates positive vibe within ourselves and our surroundings.

Simple steps to Declutter and Save Serious Money

1. Don’t rush. Have patience.

Just breathe in and breathe out. Focus on one space at a time. Pick the area you wish to de-clutter and set your intentions for the space. Go room by room, not all at once.

2. Start small

Starting small – just one drawer, one cabinet, one box. For example, if we choose garage space – then start with sorting a tool box or if it’s kitchen area – may be just a glassware cabinet is perfect to begin with. Taking everything out of the drawer, closet, or container first—everything! Then clean the space before putting things back. We recommend working on the easiest (least cluttered space) first so we will have a quick reward to motivate ourselves for the more challenging areas.

3. Identifying and Sorting

Quickly browsing through each object, item, paper, and determining if the item supports/reflects who we are or is it just taking up our time & energy and physical & psychic space that could be put to better use. One important rule is to sort collections like with like, which works like a stocktake, it highlights what we have, need and use or if we have duplicates. Consider getting some boxes ready and label them – stuff to keep, stuff to sell and stuff to recycle.

From the duplicates choose one you favour the most, one with no damage, stains, wear and tear, unless, aging of the item adds extreme value. We don’t suggest to throw away your grandma’s old china-ware.

4. Responsibly donate and recycle

Get the clutter out of the house right away, once you have de-cluttered and set aside quality, clean items to donate. We all know by now that the clutter does have a tendency to sit wherever for months, for years. So let’s get it away asap.

Recycling and practicing responsible disposal are two of the simplest things we can do to reduce our impact on the environment.

5. Rethink and restore

Before adding anything new to your home or office, practice STOP – Stop, Take a breath, Observe (Do I need it? Do I want it? Do I have similar already?) and Proceed to rethink if it’s a good idea to restore the old possessions and bring them back to life.

After doing this exercise, we will be aware that it's just not about clearing clutter, but simplifying our life and experiencing calm & joy. We are able to make more room for the Universe to conspire for the good, as well as more room for creative expression and new and better things to come into our life—more energy, fresh ideas, like-minded people, and greater peace and harmony in the home.
